Heya folks!

It's just under two months until the con, so if you've got an act you wanna do for the FNL, now is the time to start getting them in wether they're rough or nearly finished. We've got a handful of folks who've already submitted acts, but I know there's more out there.

We do not have forms for submitting acts this year, it's all about sending in your act wether it's a few paragraphs of description or a stageplay of several pages. That will give us a better idea of what to expect and address any challenges or concerns that might come up ahead of time. There will be no at-con submissions this year. Even if you aren't 100% sure you're going to do an act, or you are still working on it--even if it's a video you may not have done until a week before the con--still get a short description submitted to the FNL list to reserve your place, so to speak.

If you want in on the action, subscribe to the FNL list before or after sending your act description in to fnl-2010 at furtherconfusion.org

http://www.furtherconfusion.org/mailman/listinfo/fnl-2010

Also, because I've been a little delayed in the past couple months, I'm not going to be very draconic about getting stuff in by December 15th. If it's a little after, there will be no gnashing of teeth nor flames. :)

I have four plushes, made this month. This is plush month, as I have at least one more to make in the next few days.

Three of the four were made from the same pattern, which I tweaked as I went along. The black, green and grey guy was first, the purple, black and white was last. I don't know if anybody else can tell that, but I sure can. I think that a fourth iteration would have perfected the pattern... but I only had three ordered. :( Anybody want to commission a plush? They're $100 for these relatively small ones, assuming your markings are fairly basic. Sadly I don't think I can squeeze one in before Christmas, I've got too much on my plate, but I could get one done in January, I think. For Valentine's maybe?

Then I did a teddy-bear style lion of confusing gender. :D She's a girl, but has a mane anyhow. I tried to give her girly eyes.

Here's the pics:

Hi, I'm making a Tasmainian Devil and am in need of some small yardages. I have 2 yards of DF black longpile, but I really need...

1/2 yd DF Longpile Camel
1/2 yd DF Extra Longpile Black or Black Fox (or less than 1/2 yard)
And a scrap of DF Extra Longpile white or White Fox (both 3 inch).

I need the Camel fur for the muzzle, but if you have a color that matches a devil's muzzle I would totally love it. The Extra long black is just for accents and chest fluffiness, and I only need enough white for the white stripe on the chest.

I recently bought the two-disc special edition of Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince and with it comes a pamphlet getting a digital copy for portable devices - it even has a lovely diagram on the back showing a macbook linked up to an iPod Touch.

I thought this was a cool feature, one I've never seen on a DVD I've bought before. This is the sort of thing that usually comes with Blu-ray for PS3 and PSP connectivity.

So I read the rest of it, including the fine print. And subtly hidden within is epic fail.

Fail

Anyone who knows their technology will recognise the macbook and a dubious imitation of an iPod Touch / iPhone on the back of the case. But in the fine print it explicitly says 'Windows Media compatable only' and 'Not compatable with iTunes or with Macintosh and iPod devices'. Fail.

Even more subtle fail is it mentions 'Consumers must reside in Australia or New Zealand', which means, unless you were savvy enough to have imported a Zune, this won't do you much good either.

Granted most devices capable of playing video usually come with a media converter of sorts, but if you have that sort of software, more often than not, you have some sort of DVD ripper as well. Which pretty much makes this digital copy worthless. Especially as it will have some sort of weird DRM that will probably prevent it from being used anywhere except on a PC.

I will download this and let you know how much more fail is to come. Keep you posted.

I've decided that i want to make a German Shepherd fursuit! :3

this little guy will be used for non fur related activities, like running around at charity events and charity bowling events and stuff like that! :3 This is made so that it's a bit easier for kids to know what it is and a little friendlier to look at. (face it, my suit's adorable, but it's a little scary for kiddos)

What do you guys think? any ideas? any coloration changes? Would you guys like to see progress photos?

The fourth Girls With Slingshots book is out and it's all about the wedding storyline. Since a few people have asked, I thought I'd go ahead and say it - yes, ALL the S*P/Girls With Slingshots crossover strips are in it. To my knowledge (could be wrong), this includes the few build up strips with Davan signing the wedding album, and Vanessa relaying her nervousness about him going.

All proceeds go to the Keep Danielle Corsetto From Being Sober Foundation - dedicated to keeping a young female cartoonist plied with liquor.

Success! A PS3 bundle from Best Buy was obtained. Two in fact lol. I didn't want to make my parents deal with the crowds at an ungodly hour so I went to pick it up myself (also, so you don't think we're rich and can just toss around PS3s this is my bday and only Christmas present lol)

I couldn't sleep so got up at 5:30 and went to the Best Buy down the street. there were alot of people in the small store but not as many at the register though enough people were certainly carting out large TVs! Stupid Best Buy, they had -plenty- of PS3s XD; I'm glad the workers weren't looking too haggard, infact one I was talking to said it was alright really. Like a busy day, rather than freaking insane. I was looking at PS3 controllers too and one mentioned how they were price matching Radio Shack's sale on it even though I had no idea. So nice of him! So got a 2nd controller for half off. I checked the store prices for Little Big Planet and Ratchet and Clank to see how much I was really saving with the bundle, and it turns out to be more like $50. But $50 is still $50! Can't wait to tell Justin I'll have a PS3 for Christmas, I've been using to Ratchet and Clank to draw him more into video games >.> <.<

Apparently my parents couldn't sleep either, so went to a different Best Buy and got one too XD; I feel bad, they spent at least 20 minutes in line whereas I didn't spend any time at all, either times.

Was planning on going back to bed, but I was pretty awake so went to Walmart looking for bedsheets. I got there around 6:30 and they were already sold out. Bummer, so got some picture frames instead. I can actually have photos of my loved ones around the home now and frame some gift art I've gotten lol. Planning on covering one wall of my office with lovely gifts from people :3

Hit the mall afterwards but didn't really see much. Bought a sweater and two cute skirts but that's it. Got more sparkly gel pens from JoAnn's at 50% off. Can't wait to use them on gifts and such X3 Yay more gel pens!

Got my hair permed straight and trimmed. Yeesh I needed a trim so bad! It's a subtle change but with the naturalizer too, my hair is looking and feeling alot nicer X3 Yay for having a hairdresser mom.

Went over to the home we're having the craftshow at tomorrow to help make signs and decorate. Yeesh, posterboard really absorbs sharpies! We decimated a good bunch before we went and got the super big fist sized sharpies. Still feel extremely anxious about tomorrow. It can SO easily be a HUGE flop. I really really hope it does happen the way I think it will -.-;;

Thanksgiving day was really nice. Finished up some commission work and have that carted off, so yay I get paid! Then headed home to my parent's place and chatted with them about their trip to Taiwan and Japan, which they just got back from. Was so good to see them <3

Then over to the neighbors' for dinner! We had 4 families total and we all know each other quite well and I utterly love everyone's company. We had fried turkey pieces, like fried chicken, to try something new! Was interestig though I still prefer the more traditional oven baking. The drumsticks were all undercooked but small pieces were quite tasty! Though I'm mad at my appetite. I was starving constantly all week, then not so much yesterday. Pretty standard fare otherwise, though we had this really interesting nutty cranberry sauce. So tasty and unusual X3 Mmm.. pumpkin cheesecake.. Everything was soooo good.

I played a bit of Call of Duty, which was fun but I always suck at shooter games, then we watched the football game. I'm not too into football but it turned out to be a really good game!.. if you're rooting for the Broncos, which we were :D;

I'm so tired lol, I haven't gotten a full night's sleep all week and yet I'm still up and raiding tonight XD;; Need to be up early tomorrow for set up.. then up way way early Sunday for soup kitchen stuff.

Wish me luck with tomorrow!!

We've been making these for a couple of years for other fursuit builders, and we did a panel on how to make them last FC. I finally got them up on our web page, so if you'd like to buy a pair for your own use they're now available at $35 per pair.

These pawpads measure 12" from tip to heel and 10" across from toepad to toepad, with a lip running around the pads. As you can see, there's quite a bit of vertical relief to these pawpads. The pads are cast in colored latex and filled with soft foam, with both cloth reinforcement in the latex of the pads and a cloth backing to the whole padsheet.

Lazy roleplaying: Kalinda, my serpent character, delivers a lecture on How Magic Works.

Kalinda exhales slowly, smoke swirling out in strange sigils, and smiles. "Half of it is simply gaining and keeping that narrative trust. I sit around pulling things out of the air - and that establishes me as a sorceress, without me ever stating, baldfacedly, 'Kalinda is a powerful sorceress'." She licks her lips with a pointed tongue. "So disbelief loosens around me, and I can... get things done."

Kalinda waves a hand carelessly, and your chair rises into the air. "Edit too much, take too many liberties, and it all comes crashing down." The walls fall away, like stage flats losing their props, revealing a black, empty space behind; off in the distance, things flicker fugitively. "When do you stop believing my story?" And quicksilver rains down from the midnight sky. "How far can I go? How far can I weave my words?" Columns of light burst all around, coalescing into strange angelic beings, their countless arms swirling and drifting; they precess clockwise, singing. "And can I break my own spell?" Pickles fall out of the angel's mouths, shimmering with notes.

How much this applies to reality, in less ostentatious ways, is left as an exercise for the reader. Experiment!

So [info]rigelkitty and I met up with Renfield yesterday and explored Wild and Wonderful West Virginia. Plenty of abandoned buildings and stuff out his way. Our first stop was the abandoned Paw Paw railroad station.

The abandoned Paw Paw railroad station

Then we went across the Potomac to check out Paw Paw Tunnel on the C&O Canal. Someone's cows has escaped from a nearby farm and were wandering around in the parking lot. We went to the dark and scary Paw Paw tunnel, but had left the flashlights in the car so we couldn't go too far in. Then I went to check out the abandoned railroad bridge and tripped over some barbed wire. Ouch.

Someone's cows escaped and were wandering around the C&O Canal

We took a break for lunch at Grandma's County Kitchen and Inn (103 Winchester Street, Paw Paw, WV 25434). The food was quite good and reasonable priced, fed the three of us for about $20.

After lunch, we attempted to drive down the abandoned railroad grade to our next destination, but had to turn around after the NO TRESPASSING signs and Rigel's advice that it wasn't exactly suitable terrain for a Prius. Instead, we took a long, winding, single-lane road called "Detour" that led us to our next stop, Magnolia, WV. Magnolia was quite a bustling town back in the day. We stopped just north of Magnolia and wandered down an abandoned railroad grade to an old bridge over the Potomac. Renfield found a broken insulator that said "HEMI" on it, so he was happy.

Abandoned railroad bridge, one of many

We made a brief stop at Cherry Orchard Cemetery. I couldn't find a lot of information on it on the internets, other than Elijah Shambaugh was buried there. We found his grave, as well as a really old handcarved one nearby that read "MARGRET ATHY DIE MAY THE 10TH THE YER OF 1859."

Our next stop was going to be Jerome. I had read on Wikipedia that Jerome was an uninhabited community and there was an abandoned train order office leftover from when the Western Maryland Railway was abandoned. Eventually the road we were on ended, so I started cautiously driving down the abandoned right-of-way over ballast stones. As we reached our destination, Rigel expressed concerns we might actually be on someone's driveway. It looked like the path ended up ahead, so I figured it might be a good time to turn around.

I started backing up to a little side path, but apparently we had attracted the attention of whoever lived at the end of the driveway. They started yelling at us. Not a good sign...

bang-bang-bang-bang-bang!

"They're shooting at us!" said Rigel, and we made a hasty retreat back down the driveway as fast as my Prius could safely go on railroad ballast.

So that was our excitement for the day. We stopped again in Magnolia and consulted maps. I wanted to go to another abandoned railroad bridge further out, but we gave up on it and turned around about halfway there. Instead, we unexpectedly found yet another abandoned house right on the side of the road. While I was taking pictures, a guy in a pickup truck pulled up alongside.

"Ya thinking of renting it?" he asked.

"It is cheap?" I replied.

He told me it was his buddy's place and there were deer in the backyard in case I wanted pictures, but after our previous encounter with the locals I thought it best to stay on the road.

Another abandoned house...

We made it back to the main road and then off onto another winding dirt road up a hill. Sitting in the middle of absolutely nowhah was an old abandoned church, with a little graveyard behind it.

An abandoned church in the middle of nowhah...

We dropped off Renfield and played a bit with his dog, Hemi, and then headed out, stopping for more pictures of some of the abandoned buildings we say on the way in. All in all, it was a pretty full day and the best part was we made it back alive! -:)

So many abandoned houses...

Renfield says this was an old general store

Hi Folks,

My fursuit needed some eyes, naturally, so I thought I'd share my experience of attempting to make them. After a bit of debate on whether to go for cartoony or taxidermy eyes I hit on a new idea: big black shiny eyes. My first thought was to cut up some cheap sunglasses, however I couldn't find any suitable ones, so I resolved to make my own.

I bought some 3mm dark tint acrylic (aka perspex or plexiglas) from eBay. It was only £1.30 (around $2) for an A4 sized sheet - less than I expected. 3mm is pretty thick, you could probably use 1mm, however it's the thinnest I could get hold of. It does have the benefit of strength - I tried standing on one of the eyes and it didn't break ^.^

My process for creating the eyes was as follows:
  • Create a wooden mold:
    • Screw a block of wood to another bit of wood. Use MDF or balsa wood if possible to avoid problems with the grain
    • Use a rasp or file to get it into the right shape
    • Sandpaper it perfectly smooth
  • Create a cutout of the mold
    • Unscrew your block from the mount, place it on your 2nd piece of wood and draw around it.
    • Screw your block back to the mount
    • Cut out the outline you just drew, leaving about an extra 4mm. I used a power drill to get started, then a jigsaw to go around the outline.
  • Preheat your oven to 150 degrees C
  • Cut a piece of acrylic big enough to cover the mold plus a generous border
  • Peel off the protective coating from the acrylic
  • Place the plastic on top of the mold and put it in the oven. Just balance it on there, it's fine...
  • Wait about 5 minutes (less for thinner plastic, just watch for it to go droopy)
  • Pull it out of the oven, make sure it's lined up, and push the cutout down over the top of the mold
  • Keep it held down for a minute while it cools
  • It's done!
It may seem a bit haphazard to just place the plastic on there and then squish it down when it's hot, but in practice I found it works perfectly. I did start off by trying to make guides so I could slide the top piece down perfectly, but it was completely unnecessary and just got in the way.

Friday Five nipped from [info]torakiyoshi
1. What would you do if a random stranger gave you a bouquet of roses?

Probably thank them and then put the roses in a vase.

2. What is the most commonly used color in your house?

Probably powder blue. There is also a lot of natural wood.

3. What color is your favorite t-shirt?
White: A Tiffany "I'm to sexy for my shirt" tee

4. If you could go back in time, what time would you live in and where would you live?

Most likely the mid '30s to early '40s. I'd live close to a railroad. Why? So I could get a job with a railroad when they were at their peak. Or the late '40s or early '50s. The time the first diesels were really making their mark.

5. If you could have any ONE thing in the entire world (not including money) what would it be?

A very friendly and intelligent lion. One that would be gentle and friendly to people and smart enough to understand what I was telling him.

I have a Badger Whirlwind II compressor (Model 80-2) and a Badger Crescendo 175 bottom feed dual action airbrush along with 39 different paints and Golden Airbrush medium (never used), 3 bottles that are used for the airbrush, a color cup, 3 different needles and three different tips, as well as two different airbushing books. A lot of the paints have never been used, some of the bottles are older but the paint is still usable (and even some of those are completely full and have never been opened), and a lot of the ones that have been used are more than half full.

I got this originally for a project that never happened, and I have used it a total of maybe 3 times to test it out. Everything is in working order, and everything in the pictures is what is offered. I figured I would try the fursuit community before I put it on ebay, since airbrushes can be an indispensable item to a fursuit maker.

I guess I'm open to offers to see what people might be interested in paying for this whole set, and winner pays shipping.

So today I've heard that two murderers escaped from Aachen prison, roughly one hour north of Cologne. It was all over the news. Police has been able to follow them to Cologne, but in Cologne, they lost track of the murderers.

Well, Cologne is a central point with its unidirectional Autobahn connections, a well buildt and maintained public transport system, and multiple large train stations.

I knew the murderers wouldn't be in Cologne to stay. It was so obvious that they just tried to escape into an unknown direction. I shrugged it off, packed my stuff and went to Nightfox's place in Essen Kettwig.

As I arrived, there was an unusually high presence of police, helicopters and stuff. What happened?

Well, the murderers took a hostage, and forced her to drive to...? Yes, to a little village called Essen Kettwig. They dropped off the hostage at a certain place, just a few meters away from Nightfox's house. This happened at exactly THE SAME TIME I arrived at Nightfox's place.

It's sort of scary to realize that they must have been very close the whole time. They were probably sitting in one of the countless cars that passed me by while I was on my way to the same f*cking place.

Nightfox's little village is now all over the news. And I'm sure as hell not going outside to smoke today. :)

Since people showed a lot of interest in my previous post (thanks for all the comments!!), here's the progress of how I made the head from scratch.
As said this was my first try at making anything like this, that's why there's a lot of stuff that I would do differently on a second head. I tend to do things on 'feeling' rather than planning, but I guess that's what makes the thing look like my drawings a bit more. And what makes the lower jaw insanely short ;)

Hiya!

I'm one of the many who decided to do the task of making their own fursuit head. I am so proud of this jaw hinge. I have some furscraps coming from Mendel's before I work out furring, but here's my progress so far:

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j213/kat_aclysm/skull_jaw01.jpg
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j213/kat_aclysm/skull_jaw02.jpg

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j213/kat_aclysm/hoard_kat.jpg

A few questions because I've hit a snag at this point... I have the foam so I am ready to begin that. But how do I affix the foam to the plastic mesh and ensure a permanent bond? I've been warned that hot glue melts both mesh and foam. Anything and everything is appreciated regarding this one because I'd love to get moving on foaming this sucker already.

Also, eyes - I have no idea what to do for them in this situation, nor the slightest idea of how to work for visibility, so on. What do I make them out of? How do I put them on properly to make the animal look focussed and not like it's an accident (a mistake I've seen on some fursuits... the eyes stare off in different directions...)?

Also, airbrushing? I do not have an airbrusher but I'd like to do something regarding this. Any tips for making brushed markings on fur?

Finally - what do I put inside of its mouth? People suggest super-sculpey or model magic, but there's nothing to affix the clay to, and I fear any jawset I make would just fall out after it's first performance (or worse, smash during transit).

Please help! Thank you <3

And I have to go to the unemployment office to figure out why they seem to think I didn't file last week when I most certainly did.

You know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna follow my Mom's advice;

I'm gonna be THANKFUL that I have a car to drive to the office...
And most of all, I'm gonna be THANKFUL that I'm healthy enough to do BOTH!

Normally, seeing a post like this, you'd expect that I'd be talking about another local wildfire. Although we continue to have fires now and again, currently they are nothing compared to the bushfires in Australia. Tha's where this amazing photo was taken. The firestorm has literally turned everything orange.

Coincidently, that was the name of one of the local towns that was under a fire warning, due to one of many fires burning in the area. I listened online to ABC Central West in Australia to see how they were doing with their wildfires. Towards the end of the night, I sent the broadcast an e-mail, offering their listeners my support, as I know what's like having been through several fires before.

I was surprised this morning to learn that the radio station in Orange responded and that they're like to interview me! They think it would be interesting to hear from an American, how the Cali fires and the Aussie fires are very similar. I'm also interested in hearing how Australia treats wildfires differently than we do.

I took them up on the offer! I'll keep you guys posted and try to get an audio recording of the show. I think I'm only going to be on for about 7 to 8 minutes. It's not a full hour or anything.

Its just I've had a couple ideas for re-wording a couple songs. Might be fun for a con variety show.

Strangely enough, I liked hosting the whole family at our house better than going over to one of theirs because it meant we were in control of the situation and could make sure it ran smoothly, had good food, and so forth. Brother, brother-in-law and nieces were happily installed in front of the football game while mother, father, and sister were happy to engage in "deep conversation" about the state of the Catholic church (and whatever other rambles came by) around the table, [info]lythandra and I floated, and the cats provided entertainment for all.

My father is showing his mortality, alas ... he's still "all there," but he's losing his ability to maintain a conversational facade -- every slightly sad or potentially ticklish topic causes him to speak in a breathless tone that's "not quite crying," if you see what I mean. For somebody who's spent his whole life as Mr. Stony Face (except when clowning), this is a pretty extreme change. He's had a long life and it's kicked him around a bit, but he's content these days and considers himself a fortunate man, which is gratifying.

So yesterday, we were thankful for another year with my dad. :)

Today I intend to spend mostly working on the SJ 10-Year Collection or my next novel; haven't decided which yet. Shopping? Pfui. "Black Friday" can bite me.

Hi there :)

I'm finally in a position where I can think about building my own suit, however foam work is something which completely eludes me! I've seen some lovely examples of foam heads being sold in the US, but shipping it over to england would make the cost ridiculous.

Is there anyone in the UK who offers foam head bases/commissions? I'm wanting a canine character, please go ahead and post your examples & prices! :)

Just poking through my friends list, which has a feed of blog entries that mention me, and came up with this posting at Monsters and Rockets about a sneak preview of a new game based on the sequel, TRON Legacy. Looks nifty. Too bad I don't have cable to see the show...and I'm not very good at video games anyway.

many who know me are aware, i am allergic to cameras.
in most situation, the oly way to get a picture of me is to commit one of three act.
- 1 - stealth photography.
- 2 - picture does include kacey and/or schnolf too.
- 3 - with bribe of good alcohol. this may help with #1 above.

there are two1 reason i am this way. first is the lens of a camera is un-holy. second is my eyes are not adapted to bright light. in most situation, if i allow an image to be takeing, i will only allow if flash is not use. still, i avoid photography even with that restriction.

but, every year fc does require staff members to submit a photograph, a new photograph. the photo is require for badge art. and if is not submit, the badge will not be made proper and the picture will need being done at con, and that is horrible with flash.

this year, i did decide i would also use the image on my facebook account, and a small number of other location where i may need it. and, as there are many who read my journal, who have no idea what my appearance is, i have decide to post it here as well.

image after cut )

*1 there is other reason. my skin is pale and does reflect flash back so well that it does look very not natural. same effect that does happen under moon glow.

all the fur in this picture is crocheted from 1 piece and pinned in place. i havent done any sewing or gluing.

this piece took me about 13 hours yesterday.

This is the second suit I ever made, and a commission for a good friend of mine, Alkali. He's so tall I had to draft a pattern for the first time ever. It took two fittings before we finally got the body suit fitting the way we wanted. But once that was done I cranked this sucker out, I'm pretty proud of how it turned out too. :)

Pics under here )

Alkali had his debut at MFF 2009. There is one more ferret out there to cause chaos throughout the furry world. muahaha!

Thanks again for all the folks who commented on my previous entry of this guy. The changes made to the foam base really helped bring out the ferret shape.

This suit is so much nicer than my own, I feel like I must make myself a whole 'nother suit for myself now. Who knows when I'll find that time though. XD

I will preface this post with belated wishes of a Happy Thanksgiving to all. We stayed home, as Gaby is pretty sick, as were my mom, my brother and his wife. So, our camp decided to sit this one out rather than make the 45 - 60 minute drive from my place (which means at least TWICE that for everyone else). I ended up sleeping a lot, since I had a very long day on Wednesday. Ended up sitting in on a 4 hour gig with Sean, who was rendered voiceless thanks to his cold. To be honest, I was surprised I managed to sit through it all. It's been nearly 2 years since I did a full night's gig and thought my throat would really get torn up. Good to know I still got it, I guess. ;)

Anyway, I've been pretty worn down since I didn't really manage my sleep schedule too well over the past week. So, I ended up sleeping a lot today to make up for it. I realize how late it is by the time I'm actually posting this, but I also decided to write up a small con report, which turned into a LONG con report. So, after breaking to eat, watch some DVRed stuff and take a surprise power nap, I'm back on my feet and here to present it to you now. ;)

I am not good at writing concise con reports. Let that be my warning to you all now. ;) )

That's it for now.

Art will be posted very soon. Keep an eye out. :)

Seeya!
